How to use the sheet maker
- Choose the type of sheet.
- Set the number of systems (staves or staff groups) per page — fewer, larger staves are easier for beginners.
- Pick the staff line spacing: 2 mm is typical for printed music; 3.5 mm suits young children and people with low vision.
- Add bar lines if you want pre-divided measures, and choose US Letter or A4.
- Print, or download the SVG to print later or open in a design program.
When printing, choose “Actual size” or 100% scaling and turn off headers and footers in the print dialogue for a clean page.
Staff sizes explained
Engravers describe staff size as the distance between the top and bottom lines, or between adjacent lines. A “staff space” of about 1.75–2 mm gives the familiar look of printed sheet music, 2.2–2.5 mm is comfortable for handwriting, and 3–4 mm is used for early learners who are still drawing noteheads carefully. Larger spacing means fewer staves fit on the page.
Worked example
A piano teacher wants homework paper for a seven-year-old. They choose Grand staff, set 5 systems per page and extra large 3.5 mm spacing, add 4 bar lines per system and pick US Letter with a title line. Each grand staff pairs a treble and a bass clef joined by a brace, and the four measures per line give the student clear boxes to fill. For older students, the same sheet at standard spacing fits 7 systems.
Reading tab
In guitar tablature each line is a string — the top line is the high E string and the bottom line is the low E — and numbers show which fret to press, with 0 meaning an open string. Tab shows where to play but not rhythm, so many players write standard notation and tab together, which is what the staff + tab sheet is for. Bass tab works the same way with four lines for the E, A, D and G strings.
Tips for writing music by hand
- Use a sharp pencil so you can erase and correct.
- Draw noteheads as slightly tilted ovals that fill a space or sit centred on a line.
- Stems go up on the right for notes below the middle line and down on the left for notes above it.
- Write clef, key signature and time signature at the start of the first line.
- Leave space between measures for accidentals and lyrics.
- Keep a ruler handy for bar lines and beams.
Uses in teaching
Blank staff paper is used for dictation exercises, writing scales and arpeggios, practising clef reading by copying melodies, composing short pieces and theory exams. Tab and chord-box sheets are popular for guitar lessons, where students write down riffs and chord shapes they learn by ear. Printing your own means you can match the size and layout to the student.
Common layouts by instrument
| Instrument or use | Suggested sheet |
|---|---|
| Piano, organ, harp | Grand staff, 6–8 systems |
| Voice, violin, flute, trumpet | Treble clef, 10–12 staves |
| Cello, trombone, bassoon | Bass clef, 10–12 staves |
| Guitar | Staff + tab, or tab only |
| Bass guitar | 4-line bass tab or bass clef |
| Songwriting | Staff with chord boxes |
| Young beginners | Any type at 3.5 mm spacing, 5–6 systems |
Parts of a staff
A staff (or stave) has five lines and four spaces; notes placed on them show pitch, and ledger lines extend the range above or below. A clef at the start fixes which pitch each line represents. Bar lines divide the music into measures, and a double bar marks the end of a section. A system is a group of staves played together — for piano, the treble and bass staves joined by a brace form one system.
About the clef symbols
Clefs are drawn with the musical symbol characters built into your device’s fonts. Most computers and phones include them; if a clef doesn’t appear, choose “Plain staff” and draw the clef by hand, or print from another device.
